The bookshop that refused to die

When the third national bookshop chain collapsed in our small market town, everyone assumed Mr. Hossain's tiny independent bookshop on Bridge Street would be the next to go. He had no website to speak of, no ordering system, and a window display he had not changed since at least the previous decade. He was seventy-three. The rent had doubled. The accountants advised him, gently, to sell.

He did not sell. Instead, over a single autumn, he did three small things that nobody on the main street had really tried.

First, he made the shop visibly comfortable. He moved the heavy reference books into the basement, brought in three cheap second-hand armchairs, put a kettle on the counter, and quietly invited customers to sit and read for as long as they wanted. Sales did not fall. They roughly doubled.

Second, he started running an absurdly simple weekly event. Every Thursday evening he chose one short story from his shelves, photocopied it onto a single A4 page, and read it aloud to whoever turned up. The first night, four people came. By the eighth week, he had to use the church hall next door.

Third, he stopped trying to compete with the online giants on price. "They have warehouses," he said. "I have a Thursday evening, an armchair and a kettle. I'll keep my advantages." He raised his prices slightly and put a small handwritten card next to the register explaining that the difference paid for the armchairs, the kettle and the rent of the church hall.

Three years later, the shop is still open. Mr. Hossain is now seventy-six. But Bridge Street is a livelier place, the church hall is full every Thursday, and a small line of larger booksellers from neighboring towns has quietly come to ask him how he did it.
